BENEFITING: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
The Character Cranes Project was created by our 3rd grade class after they studied the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr. They were inspired by this child's level of hope and determination while fighting for her life against Leukemia. One of our third graders was left with the imprint in her heart to "do something" for children like Sadako. Her compassion spread like wildfire in our class and soon enough they were coming up with ideas on how to raise money to donate to a hospital that specializes in treating children like Sadako. They created a plan to make and sell paper cranes at our school in hopes to raise $1,000 for St. Jude's in honor of Sadako and her 1,000 paper cranes. We created this "virtual coin jar" so that people who are not at our school can also help us reach our goal. I am very proud of the initiative and innovation that they have shown in planning and preparing for this fundraiser. They have demonstrated a level of collaboration that has bloomed from one student's compassionate voice into a wave of hope in our community.
