Enjoy getting to know Katy!
Katy is a 13 year old girl in St. Louis and is one of only three known cases in the world of a specific deletion on Chromosome 6. This has affected her physically and mentally since birth. She began to talk at age six and finally took her first hesitant steps at age seven. She can now walk short distances on her own, but the strain of doing so exhausts her quickly.
After reading about a program called "I Run 4 Michael" that paired special needs kids with able-bodied runners who could run in honor of them, we decided to sign Katy up. Little did we know how much that one decision would change our lives. Our family had the good fortune to get paired with an incredible man through that organization that changed our lives forever. He didn't just run for Katy, he challenged our entire family to run with him. And we soon discovered Katy wanted to be out there more than any of us. During our first jog together - in a converted bike trailer - all we heard was "Go faster, Daddy! Go faster." So started an entire new chapter in our lives.
Race day is now one of Katy's favorite activities. She constantly cheers "Go runners!" to everyone as we make our way through the course and her favorite cheer of "Almost to the finish line!" before we even cross the start line has people laughing all around us from the very beginning. And when we cross the finish line, she yells "Daddy, we won!" Every time.
However, the special needs stroller we've used for the past three years has become too small for our "not so little" girl at this point. And as she continues to get bigger and weigh more, we also need equipment that just helps us make it to the finish line each race.
That's why we've set up this fundraising page to help us reach our goal of eventually acquiring one of the top special needs racing chairs on the market.
At this point, Katy and I, along with many friends and family who have helped along the way, have run in four different half marathons together, along with over 15 other 5k-10k distances. And as long as she continues to love doing it, I'm going to keep going out there and pushing her.
Thank you for your help.
