Welcome to the Chariot for Niki fundraising page, hosted by myTEAM Triumph: Ainsley’s Angels of Eastern Carolina, on behalf of Kevin G. Toomey.
YOU MADE THE PHOTO ON THE LEFT HAPPEN!!! Niki's brother Max moves her into her chariot, as her Mom, Dad, Kevin Toomey, Dick Hoyt, Rick Hoyt, and Ainsley's Dad (Rooster) look on in awe and joy!
Given your outpour of generosity, Kevin and Niki's second Freedom Push Chair arrived at Niki's house in early March. Also, Niki's customized chariot from Team Hoyt Running Chairs is paid for and nearly ready to be presented to her during the weekend of 18/19 May by TEAM HOYT!
After much reflection, Kevin provides the following update:
NIKI’S JOURNEY TO EARN THE TITLE
As I age , I have come to learn that the journey IS the destination.
As I take this journey with Niki Adams , I come to realize that we are only scratching the surface in asking for help to put her into her own custom racing chair to allow her to once again experience the unfettered freedom of the run!!
She needs comfort and proper alignment and a keen eye on skin integrity...things we often take for granted…the more I walk through the forest , the more trees I notice. As such, I shall continue to fundraise for her , above and beyond just her chair. I have identified several additional needs that must be fulfilled (and to fulfill we will). You are the spirit first and body last, so let your spirit shine before men that they may see their Christ in you. Your continued love and generosity humbles me and brings me to tears, as with you continued help, Niki Adams will lead the way at the Marine Corps Marathon in October 2013. Niki will not only join the less than one percent of the world known as a "MARATHONER" as she Captains her team to mission accoploshment, but will also ensure she is as comfortable and safe as possible during the 26.2 mile journey. God bless you all.
Who is Kevin Toomey and why is he doing this for Niki?
A 61 years old, a registered nurse , originally from South Boston Massachusetts, Kevin went to elementary school with Niki’s mother. People have told Kevin that his gift in life is to inspire others to act in some small positive way, and when Niki’s mother told Kevin that Niki had been in a terrible auto accident resulting in significant brain injuries and the need for her to be wheelchair bound for life, Kevin asked if he could dedicate his participation in the San Francisco marathon to her. Last summer, Kevin presented Niki with the Marathon medal and fell in love with Niki’s positive attitude. He thought about how amazing it would be to push Niki in a road race, like he has seen the inspirational Dick and Rick Hoyt do so many times. He felt that she would enjoy the feeling of freedom , and her parents could perhaps meet other families in similar situations. Kevin truly appreciates your assistance in helping to create a life-changing experience for Niki and her family.

What is myTEAM TRIUMPH - Ainsley's Angels of Eastern Carolina?
myTEAM TRIUMPH is an athletic ride-along program created for children, teens, adults and veterans with disabilities who would normally not be able to experience endurance events such as triathlons or road races. Everyone's support is much appreciated, as we aim to run many miles and create many SMILES !
Who is Ainsley?
Ainsley does not talk or walk; she does not play for fun; but she smiles, while out for a run. An inspiration to thousands, she is an amazing little girl with a smile that will light up any room. Shortly after being diagnosed with an extremely rare progressive genetic nerve disorder called Infantile Neuroaxonal Dystrophy (INAD), Ainsley completed the Surfer's Healing Virginia Beach 5K road race. Her first of many running-aided, wind-induced smiles took our family's collective breath away as she received her finisher's medal and became an official Team Hoyt Virginia Beach (THVB) ATHLETE! Inspired by Dick and Rick Hoyt, and the only running team authorized by the Hoyt's to use their name, THVB provided Ainsley's family with a therapeutic means to fight the devastation associated with learning and trying to live with the fact that your child has a terminal illness. The positive energy surrounding the start line, the children smiling from ear to ear, the togetherness of every member preparing to "roll with the wind", the fearlessness of the athletes, the normalcy of the family, and the love we all have for each other is a therapy like no other. In an effort to spread this amazing experience to as many people as possible, Ainsley's Angels aims to see other families experience what the Hoyt's have experienced over 1000 times and what we have experienced over 40 times (so far). As such, we created this chapter of myTEAM Triumph to ensure others can "roll with the wind" and live up to the philosophy of, "Yes You Can."
