EVENT DATE Jul 16, 2016
The Mongol Rally is an epic annual race from London to Mongolia. The rules are simple: raise money for charities and get to Mongolia in a car that costs less than a grand.
Myself and two friends will be taking this 10,000 mile journey starting in July. The charities we are raising money for:
1. Cool Earth
Why: This is the Mongol Rally's charity. Half of the world's rainforest has been destroyed in the last 40 years. Cool Earth works alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction.
2. No Stomach For Cancer
Why: I lost my mother to stomach cancer years ago. She was an incredibly brave woman and put up with more pain and suffering than I could ever imagine. All forms of cancer suck, but stomach (gastric) cancer has one of the highest mortality rates at 72% (fifth deadliest). Meaning there’s a 72% chance the patient will be dead within five years of diagnosis. One of the main reasons for this is because there are no early signs or symptoms. Look, I can’t bring my mother back, and I can’t stop this sickness (not yet anyway), but I can raise money in the hopes that we will find ways to sooner detect and treat this cancer.
3. Beat the Street Wrestling
Why: Beat the Street is a local nonprofit here in New York City that keeps inner city youth off the streets by engaging them with athletic competition through physical training, team building exercises and mentorship.
4. St. Louis Arc
Why: The Mission of the St. Louis Arc is to empower people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families to lead better lives by providing a lifetime of high-quality services, family support and advocacy. Brendan's sister greatly benefitted from The Belle Center's early childhood services early in life and continues to be heavily involved in the organization to this day.
