BENEFITING: The Empowerment Plan
Last month, I participated in the Midnight Run. I collected, purchased, organized, and distributed clothing, toiletries, pillows, and blankets for the homeless in New York City. I spoke to numerous homeless men and women and helped to provide them with jackets to keep them warm. At some point, we ran out of coats, and I realized we weren't doing enough. There were more homeless people than jackets.
Last week my mom saw a story on the news about a company, The Empowerment Plan, that was making coats that turned into sleeping bags. The coat could also fold up and turn into a bag with a strap. Importantly, the people making the coats are hired from shelters in Detroit as full-time employees, and trained as seamstresses with the hope that they can find housing and get on their feet again. It reminded me of the Midnight Run and I realized that there is way that I can finally hand out more jackets to those who need them. And so I started this coat drive.
I am asking you to help me make this a warmer, better, winter and holiday season for so many. Each coat costs $100. All donations are 100% tax deductible. I am hoping to raise enough money to buy and ship 50 coats to NY so I can distribute them to our homeless. I would like to find a way to keep our cold New Yorkers a little warmer. Any amount you can contribute towards this cause is appreciated.
Thank you so much and wherever you are, I hope you are warm. Happy holidays!
