Charlie's Cause for Change
Organized by: Charles Alton
For a long time I have had the idea of helping out in any way possible in the Palestinian territories. With all of the recent turmoil and sad stories that I have heard from the region, I decided that now is the the time to do something about it. When doing some research I came across a well-respected NGO by the name of Project Hope (http://projecthope.ps/) which is located in the historic city of Nablus. The NGO was created in 2003 while the city was still patrolled by the Israeli army during the Second Intifada. About half the population of Nablus is under 20 years old and the unemployment rate was 60% ten years ago. Project Hope gives children a safe place to learn and grow while outside of school. In Nablus, children only go to school from 10am to 12:30pm so clearly that is just not enough time. Project Hope provides free English tutoring before school and then the majority of the other programs are offered after 1pm. The classes are provided all over the area including in the refugee camps, community centers, and the new English center built by Project Hope. My costs for the program will be about $2,000. This includes round-trip air to and from Nablus via Tel Aviv, the $150 per month housing costs, $100 for supplies for the programs, and living expenses while I'm there. Any additional money that is raised over the $2,000 mark will be donated directly to Project Hope to help out in any way possible. Thank you all so very much!
Also, here's a cool video someone made about the program:
