Charlotte, We've Got Your Back!
Organized by: Jen Stevens
My beautiful, funny, spirited niece Charlotte is 13 years old, and has had to go to London to get medical attention that only a few doctors in the world can provide her. Her situation merits super-specialized treatment, as she has a condition called Loeys-Dietz Syndrome, impacting all of the connective tissue in her body-- and consequently, all of the systems in her body. She has already had many, many surgeries in her lifetime, and has a wonderful team of doctors in the USA, both in St. Paul, MN, as well as at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. There is a spinal surgery not allowed in the USA that is being done with great success in England. Her mom worked hard to get Charlotte to London to receive care from a surgeon there who has been successfully performing this particular type of surgery for a good while, with terrific outcomes. It's a surgery Charlotte needed to have; without it, her future would be bleak.
The family is currently having to pay almost $1,000 a week for a flat in London while Charlotte finishes out her hospital stay, and they are having to stay there for several weeks past her release, for followup care. They will have to return to London in three months time as well, for more work. They are still paying rent back home, and are struggling mightily to keep all of their finances from going under. They are quickly sinking--running out of money with the extensive travel and hidden costs of such a tremendous trip and undertaking. Any help, big or little, that you can put forward for this family is so deeply appreciated.
