Right now, 49 million Americans are going hungry, and that's not okay. Shrink the scope, and you'll find that 1 in 4 people in San Francisco and Marin face the threat of hunger on any given day. They aren't just homeless or extremely poor. They could be people in the middle, who make too much to qualify for benefits, but not enough to feed themselves reliably.
The FEED Foundation is doing their part to support hunger relief efforts stateside and around the world. Join me in supporting their efforts by donating whatever you're able to and spreading the word about the organization and the issue of hunger.
If you want to go a step further (literally!), run the 10K, and you will instantly provide 10 meals for those going hungry in your local area. Visit RUN10FEED10.COM to register. Or donate $100. Or both!
I recently volunteered at the SF-Marin Food Bank for my friend's birthday. The experience reminded me that I'd see the bank's green barrels of canned food in my school lobbies growing up. I'm not so naive to think that one run can make a world of difference, but I know when and how I can do my part. As someone who's slowly working on her running goals, what better way to celebrate that journey by making a personal achievement and feeding the community? I hope you'll join me to help erase the word "hunger" from someone's vocabulary.
*Exact cost per meal varies by city. This represents the estimated number of meals your participation provides based upon the average cost per meal through a national network of food banks.
