THE STORY:

The morning of May 9th, 2015 we suddenly lost Patrick to an Aortic Dissection. When explaining what happened to Pat, the question is always the same, "What is aortic dissection?"

An aortic dissection is a tear in the wall of the aorta that allows blood to flow within the layers of the aorta. Early diagnosis and treatment of this illness is critical for survival. The end result of an aortic dissection is that the amount of oxygen and nutrients available for the organs of the body is decreased.

Due to Pat's genetic predisposition, he was at an increased risk to suffer a dissection. Unfortunately, at the time we did not know the significant risk he ran and proper prevention.

September 24, 2016 is our "Cheers to Pat" event in NY, and this page has been set up for those who can't attend and/or want to help support a charity that relies on your donations to continue their life saving research.

Pat's best friend Drew and I will be running the Las Vegas half marathon together in memory of Pat. We both love and miss him every single day and thought this would be an amazing way to honor him and raise money for the foundation.

Kat

After Pat's death and connecting with the John Ritter Foundation, I decided to fundraise as part of Team Ritter and train for my first half marathon last February. I discovered not only was I kinda good at running, but it helped with my grief and healing.

I love and miss Pat more than I could ever put into words. He was my best friend and my life. I run in memory of him and to help support the John Ritter Foundation.

Drew

I am running in memory of my best friend, Pat Byrne.  Think of all the best qualities a human being can have and you'd be thinking of Pat.

Among many things, he was genuine, kind, generous, compassionate, fun, smart, passionate, and one of the funniest people I'll ever meet.    Time spent with Pat guaranteed fun and laughs.  Everyone enjoyed his company.  He was all about the people in his life:  his fiancée' Kat, his mom and sisters, family, and friends.  He brought joy to all and we miss him every day.

I never liked long distance running.  Getting through a long run requires inspiration. Pat is that inspiration, not only to run, but to fight against thoracic aortic disease with the John Ritter Foundation, which is driving awareness and funding research for future treatments.  Let’s help eliminate this condition that took Pat and other loved ones away from us once and for all.

About The John Ritter Foundation

History

The John Ritter Foundation was created in October 2003, just weeks after John’s sudden death due to an acute aortic dissection. Formed by his widow, Amy Yasbeck, and their family for the purpose of receiving donations in honor of John’s life, the foundation is focused on thoracic aortic disease education, support, and research.

Mission

The John Ritter Foundation is dedicated to improving the identification of individuals at risk for aortic dissections and the treatment of thoracic aortic disease through medical research. The foundation also seeks to provide accurate information to the general public about the disease and its risk factors, along with support to individuals who have thoracic aortic disease or have lost a loved one to the disease. Finally, the foundation is dedicated to raising awareness of thoracic aortic disease, including risk factors, proper medical and surgical management, and recognition of symptoms of an acute aortic dissection.

Vision

A well-informed public empowered to participate in their own aortic health and prevention of premature deaths due to acute aortic dissections through research.
