To Cheff Center clients, volunteers, and staff, horses are far more than therapy tools. They are partners, teammates, and friends. Relationships built with these animals break down emotional barriers, encourage growth, inspire confidence, and provide sensory inputs that cannot be replicated in traditional therapy settings. Though the physical and emotional impact of horse involvement is priceless, managing a herd of 15-20 horses is not.
This is where our Ride-a-Thon supporting our Therapy Horse Care Fund comes in. Contributions received for this event go directly towards increasing and maintaining the health of our therapy horses, which in turn, increases and maintians the health of our programs. At this time, our Therapy Horse Care Fund needs your help to continue providing life changing therapy services and equine experiences to clients like Madelaine.
Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center is 16 year old client Madelaine’s favorite place on earth. This is largely due to the fact that ‘her’ horse Ellie is always here ready to go for a ride, share some quiet time, and sometimes even snuggle. Ellie and a couple other very special Cheff horses have been along with Maddie on her journey through life with Mitochondrial Disorder. Their strong bond is evidenced by the horsehair bracelet she never takes off, the photos filling up her instagram page, facebook status updates, and her insistence on coming to the Cheff to visit even when she’s not well enough to ride. Ellie and her predecessors not only encourage Madeline to build her core and improve her balance, but lend her strength and motivation outside of the arena, in hospitals, through surgeries, and at home, to continue fighting and smiling when most would give up.
Contributions to the Therapy Horse Care Fund have made Ellie’s existence, Madelaines experiences, and hundreds of similar stories possible. This fund allows us to go the extra mile for our horses when necessary, providing them with preventative care opportunities such as glucosamine injections for joints and appropriate fitting equipment which exponentially increase their health, happiness, and usable life as therapy horses.
Less than 7% of donated horses have the qualities essential to be accepted into Cheff programing. These horses are difficult to find and take considerable effort to acclimate to therapy life. It is our responsibility to care for these horses to the highest standards possible in consideration of our budget. This policy has proven successful, as the average turnover/burnout rate for our horses is far lower than industry average and our program continues to shine as one of the top in the country.
Horses are the lifeblood of our industry. The quality of our programing is a direct reflection of the quality of our horses and their care. Please consider supporting our Ride-a-Thon today. Your investment in our Ride-a-Thon and Horse Care Fund will have an immeasurable return- impacting not only the lives of our horses, but each of the special individuals whom they serve.
