BENEFITING: CHEFF THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER
ORGANIZER: CHEFF THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER
As the Program Director and an instructor at the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center, I get to see magic every day. I also have the pleasure of working with wonderful co-workers, horses, volunteers and clients.
Once students are in the saddle, our horses give them freedom. However, one of the most challenging parts of a students’ ride at the Cheff Center is the actual mount itself. Less mobile riders, those who use a wheelchair or have limited mobility, will do what we call a “sit and spin.” This involves a great deal of weight twisting on the horse’s back. This repeated twisting can cause cumulative pain and discomfort to the horses. Additionally, we are not able to serve clients who cannot bear weight to make the transfer.
Our horses are amazingly hard workers. We need to try to make every part of their job easier. The Sure Hands lift will do just this. The campaign to buy the lift started with a generous gift last year from Wolfe Financial. If you are willing to contribute just $10.00, and in turn someone else contributes $10.00, we can make this happen for our equine partners who literally carry the work load on their backs.
Thank you for your support of our wonderful organization and equine partners.

Monday through Friday year round, clients run, walk, and roll their way through the doors at the Cheff Therapeutic Riding Center in Augusta, Michigan eager to meet up with ‘their’ horse and go for a ride. These individuals range in age from 2 to 92 and all face physical, emotional, or cognitive challenges in their daily lives. In 2015, Cheff Center served over 350 clients with the support of approximately 170 volunteers/week.
Cheff is utilizing this amazing opportunity to raise awareness for programing as well as funding for a much needed client lift. The proposed lift will assist in transferring our less mobile clients from platform to horse safely and seamlessly. This addition will not only greatly increase the safety of the mounting process but contribute to the sustainability and longevity of our equine and human staff. As an added bonus, this lift system will enable Cheff to expand services to include a population of clients without transferring capabilities!
