BENEFITING: Futures Without Violence
EVENT: Mudderella New England 2016
EVENT DATE: Jul 30, 2016
"1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime", ( https://rainn.org/get-information/statistics/sexual-assault-victims ). This is a disgusting statistic. Many of us, myself included say to themselves, this will never be me. I'm too smart for that. I'm too tough for that. I'd fight back. But it happens. And in that moment, it doesn't matter how smart you are or how tough you are or even if you should be able to fight back. Sexual assault, like other types of violence, affects people across all cultures and settings. This violence fuels a kind of fear that no one should have to experience.
Own Your Strong empowers me to keep fighting. I want to fight for a future without violence. I want to fight for other women, (and men and children), who are too afraid to speak up. I want to fight for awareness about the statistics and the stigma that surround violence and sexual assault. And lastly, I want to fight for education. It's been my experience that violence, particularly sexual assault, is a touchy topic. That needs to stop. This needs to be talked about. When I got my ribbon tattoo, my tattoo artist said, "We as a society need to take responsibility for how we've taught our children. Violence is learned".
