THE STORY:

Chicago Religious Leadership Network On Latin America wrote -

Saq Ja’ (El Desengano in Spanish), Guatemala, is a rural Mayan community of around 50 families located in the western highlands. The community was destroyed by the army in 1982 during the civil war, and  those who escaped into the mountains or to other communities returned after the Peace Accords in 1996. After much hard work, the community built a primary and a bi-lingual (K'iche and Spanish) middle school to educate their children through 9th grade, so that they would not lose their culture by attending Spanish language schools in other areas separated from their families.

The Chicago-Guatemala Partnership, which has accompanied the community since 1999, will send this year’s Pedal for Peace funds toward scholarship support for the middle school and for those going on to higher levels of schooling. Saq Ja’s scholarship committee divides the money equally among all middle school students and divides the remaining funds equally among those going on to high school in the nearest municipality. Current high school students are studying to be accountants, social workers, nurses, computer programmers and technicians, and agronomists, and more.
