BENEFITING: DEAR JACK FOUNDATION INC
EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016
In the spring of 2005, Andrew McMahon and his band Jack’s Mannequin embarked on their first U.S. headlining tour. However, before completing the tour, Andrew paid a visit to his voice doctor in New York City because he became concerned about his health. The following morning, Andrew was admitted to the hospital because the results of his blood work were alarming. Ultimately, everyone’s worst fears were confirmed: Andrew had Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). Throughout the summer of 2005, Andrew underwent two rounds of chemotherapy, radiation treatment, and, with a stroke of good luck, a successful stem cell transplant from his sister. During his battle with ALL, it became clear to Andrew that in a generation where cancer has become the second largest cause of death in the US and the biggest public action item relevant to health, there were still major shortfalls in treatment, support, and research on behalf of the young adult demographic. In an effort to initiate change and provide a voice for the generations of young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer, Andrew founded the Dear Jack Foundation in July of 2006. MISSION The Dear Jack Foundation (DJF) advocates for and supports initiatives that directly benefit adolescents and young adults (AYA) diagnosed with cancer. The foundation supports organizations which recognize the unique challenges the AYA community faces, during and post-treatment. Through outreach, collaboration, and focused initiatives, DJF works to create more positive health outcomes and improved quality of life for all young adults in this fight. Recipients of Dear Jack funding are: the UCLA stem cell transplant program (a program on the cutting edge of cures through transplantation), The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, First Descents, Cancer for College, Matt Cwiertny Memorial Foundation’s Matt’s Mixed Tape Project and the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. This is a cause that means a great deal to Andrew; he is constantly working on opportunities to direct money and awareness to the programs and charities that fight on the front lines against these diseases. From Andrew and the rest of us here at Dear Jack HQ, thank you for your consideration and involvement in supporting young adults facing cancer. The Dear Jack Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Charitable Organization. Tax ID 45-2219082. All donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.
