BENEFITING: THE FAMILY CENTER - LA FAMILIA
EVENT DATE: Jun 01, 2013
For the past five months I have been working with The Family Center/La Familia, a Fort Collins, CO non-profit that is dedicated to creating and supporting strong, stable and self-sufficient families. By way of high-quality early childhood education, concrete support, after school tutoring, adult education and parenting resources The Family Center/La Familia has become one of the most trusted family resource centers in Northern Colorado.
Specifically, during my time at The Family Center/La Familia I took on the challenge of managing logistics for our ESL program. With the help of wonderful volunteers from Foothills Unitarian Church and Plymouth Congregation, The Family Center/La Familia has given over 25 community members the opportunity to increase their English proficiency. With the question of immigration reform and English proficiency requirements hot on the tongues of politicians, this has become an increasingly poignant service that we are able to offer.
This summer I will be moving on from my work at The Family Center to pursue my law degree at the University of Denver. But, before I leave I am hoping to raise some money for The Family Center through your donations. Locally, I am doing this through a sponsored personal challenge: a bike tour to Chicago, Illinois. My hope is that through publicity and awareness the donor and support base for this wonderful community resource will grow. The proceeds of this fundraiser will directly support family services and help keep the ESL program alive and growing.

Some questions you might have:
Why a bike tour?
I think bike touring is one of the most amazing ways to meet and connect with people. The tourist is humbled and opens themselves up to the world at large. Interactions with people on the road is a learning experience, for both sides. To a degree I find a connection between local community outreach work and bike touring in that the interactions that follow both are often uninhibited by pretension.
Chicago is a hub for community outreach centers. They range from local government and state funded centers to neo-Marxist grassroots organizations. I will be scheduling meetings with many of these entities to learn and share. I will also be stopping at a few organizations in South Dakota, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Milwaukee and Madison.
Because you believe that supported families create healthy communities. And because you'd like to receive daily updates about how much pain my butt is in after 120 miles on a bike a day.
