THE STORY:

Welcome to our fundraising page benefitting the Crohns and Colitis Foundation! On June 7, 2014, we will be running the Chicago 13.1 Half Marathon in support of one of our dearest friends, Sarah Josey, and benefitting this wonderful organization which is working towards finding a cure for inflammatory bowel disease. Below is Sarah's story.

Sarah's journey: In the fall of 2012, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that I hardly knew anything about: ulcerative colitis. Even with a doctor for a mom, bowel diseases aren't exactly dinner table conversation, and I had no idea what to expect. My disease became so severe that I was hospitalized. Luckily, I was able to go into remission thanks to some heavy duty medications, including a strong biologic immunosuppressant and high dose steroids. These drugs have some terrible and scary side effects, but I thought it was all over. I would be on medications for the rest of my life to manage the disease, but I never thought I would get that sick again. Unfortunately, I developed antibodies to the medication and was hospitalized again the next year. This time I would not get out so lucky. After 3 weeks in the hospital trying new medications, receiving IV nutrition, multiple blood transfusions, and a lot of pain, I was completely unresponsive to medications and had no choice but to have my entire colon removed. I was barely even aware that this was the last resort option for patients with severe ulcerative colitis and had no idea how it would change my life.

The last four months have had some complications and another surgery, but I am finally getting my life back. I'll return to law school in the fall and will make a full recovery. Instead of focusing on all that this disease has taken from me, I have tried to focus on how lucky I am to have such a strong support system. There is no way I would have made it through this ordeal without my friends and family. It means so much that my friends are running this race for a cause so close to me. The CCFA is an amazing organization that is a leading funder of medical research in the field of inflammatory bowel disease, which affects 1.4 million Americans. Through their research I hope that we can become closer to finding a cure for these diseases.
