UPDATE: WE HAVE REACHED OUR GOAL! THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTED THE CAMPAIGN WITH DONATIONS AND/OR BY SPREADING THE WORD. The fundraiser is now complete and no further donations are needed - the campaign will officially end tonight. We look forward to seeing everyone at the jam tonight & hopefully we'll have clear skies for the eclipse!
It's been QUITE a summer. The Full Moon Jam has been growing for 11 years, and we've seen a pretty incredible growth spurt this year, while remaining true to our core values celebrating a community connected by creative passion. We've always known in the back of our minds that someday we'd no longer be a renegade group of community minded revelers, mixing a bit of the underground with a strong sense of civic mindfulness and safety training; it's a natural progression that at some point we'd become more of an institution and event.
We've finally grown to the point that we need to interface more fully with the City. That includes... drumroll please... permits and insurance. While we've always approached the Full Moon Jams as a gift - organizers and participants have donated all their materials, fuel, and time over all these years - the permits and insurance are a financial backbreaker. And that's why we need to come to the community at large for help.
To recover the cost of the permits that made the August jam possible, as well as pay for the permits necessary to hold the September Jam, we're going to need to raise $3000. Between event insurance, fire permits, park district permits, a letter of no object from the alderman, as well as FMJ equipment and supplies, the current cost to run the FMJ comes to roughly $1500 per jam. For any one of us, that's a LOT. For all of us together, it's actually pretty doable.
The jams are maintained by an amazing amount of hard work by volunteers, but none of this would have been possible without the support and dedication of the FMJ community. The FMJ organizers are committed to keeping the jams going, so we need your support now more than ever. We absolutely promise that we will keep the jams a free, non-profit, non-commercial event celebrating a community of drumming, fire, and creativity.
This campaign is a short term funding solution to see the FMJs through the end of the 2015 season; we'll be working on creating a sustainable long term plan for the Full Moon Jam during the off-season, including potential partnerships with civic and non-profit groups, applying for grants, and a larger fundraising campaign.
For the time being, if you love the Jams, please help make September a go, and help the organizers recover the cost of making the August jam possible. We're moving forward with our plans to make the September jam happen; if you haven't heard yet, there will be a full lunar eclipse in September to end the jam (clear skies would help with our view!).
Thank you all so much. We truly appreciate all that we've built together and look forward to the next phases of our journey.
With love, music, and fire,
The Full Moon Jam Organizers
