BENEFITING: Chicago Youth Centers
ORGANIZER: Chicago Youth Centers
EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016
The year is 2009 and I am working at the Chicago Youth Centers' (CYC) Camp Rosenthal. I spend my Fall, Winter, and Spring recruiting kids from all over the South and West sides of Chicago to journey off into the woodlands of Western Michigan. I spend the summer with them at a camp who has been serving the children of Chicago's inner-city since 1960.
In my two years working at CYC, I was lucky enough to witness firsthand all of the good that they do. From their neighborhood-based centers to their summer camp far from home, from their early-childhood development classes to their teen leadership programs, and much, much more, CYC is making a real and powerful difference in communities across Chicago and in the lives of the thousands of young people who benefit from their work.
Fast-forward to 2016 and I live in Detroit with my wife and newborn baby. After dedicating myself to fitness and losing a bunch of weight a few years back, I had pushed hard into the world of triathlon and running races. I even coach an amazing group of beginner triathletes!
As part of a long and boring plan of stepping up my fitness, my plan had always been to tackle a marathon in 2016---specifically, the Chicago Marathon. Though we now life in Detroit, and love it, Chicago is still home sweet home at heart, so that was the goal. However, when I found out the Luke (our newborn) was coming along, I decided I'd shelve that goal for a year.
Then one day, out of the blue, one of my favorite old co-workers from back in my CYC days contacted me on Facebook and offered me a guaranteed spot in the race! In case you were unaware, in order to run the Chicago Marathon you have to either qualify---which I wouldn't---or be selected in a lottery... or run for a partnering organization.
This seemed too good to be true. Though I did struggle with the decision, I have an incredibly supportive wife who encouraged me to not miss the opportunity to take my goal head-on. And here we are.
The Chicago Youth Centers gives so much to so many throughout Chicago. Now it is time that I gave back. And I would love your support. Please, take a minute to click on that giant red button and make a donation. Not only will you be supporting me in this daunting task of running my first ever marathon, you will be supporting a worthy organization, and, most importantly, you will be supporting children through the city of Chicago.
