BENEFITING: COMMUNITY MEMBERS INTERESTED
― Fred Rogers
In Kathmandu, the children have few safe, clean places to play. With bustling traffic, garbage strewn streets and neighborhoods, and squatter settlements encroaching on the riverbanks and public land, the only areas left for children to play are the temples and other cultural sites. Not only is this use is causing visible deterioration to priceless historic heritage sites of the city, but the children deserve proper places to play.
COMMITTED wants to address this problem by building sustainable, community pocket parks that will not only give children a space to run around and play, but also address some of the environmental concerns that are currently affecting the Kathmandu Valley due to the rapid urbanization that is occurring. The goal is to create a vibrant community venue for everyone to meet and spend quality time away from the urban chaos. Children, Parks, and People is a component of COMMITTED’s Green Dream initiative which strives to tackle air, water, green cover, solid waste, and other subsidiary issues in a comprehensive manner. COMMITTED – Nepal will collaborate with private and public education institutions to create parks on their properties with grassroots volunteers organized as a Park Association (PA) comprised of community leaders, school staff members and students, and NGO staff. The collaboration will result in outdoor recreation program for the school children and utilization of the park for public use during off school hours.
