EVENT: 2018 Pittsburgh Marathon
EVENT DATE: May 06, 2018
I have always wanted to run for a reason and I have finally found my reason.
I will be running the 2018 Pittsburgh Half Marathon in honor of my best running friend (BRF) Carrie Deutsch and the amazing people at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh!
Carrie was born with a condition called Pulmonary Stenosis. She had a balloon valvotomy in 1990 which was a partial repair of a heart valve. She found out in December 2016 she would need a new heart valve.
She received her full sternotomy and replacement at CHOP on March 28, 2017. She was in ICU for two days and had three additional days in the hospital. While at Children's she received some of the most amazing care.
For eight weeks she was not allowed to do anything but walk. No driving, no working out - nothing. If you know Carrie, you know this was tough for her. She did cardiac rehab twice a week for nine weeks as well.
She has had some setback in her recovery, which includes recurrent Pericarditis. Through it all she has been super focused on returning to a healthy lifestyle. I will continue to run every race I can in her honor until she can join me back on the course.
If you know Carrie, you know how wonderful of a person she is. She is very giving, humble and above all an inspiration. I hope that you will help me in giving back just a little bit to a cause that is giving me my BRF back!
