BENEFITING: Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation
ORGANIZER: Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation
EVENT DATE: May 04, 2014
Ava has been receiving treatment to fight her rare and threatening autoimmune disease -juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM)- at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh for almost 18 months now. Last year she asked what she could do to help other children at the hospital, and we found ourselves running the kids' portion of the Pittsburgh Marathon! She's up for it again this year, and she and Alex are ready to proudly make their miles matter.
Running this marathon is a BIG deal for us. Ava's disease can destroy her muscles, but our girl is still cartwheeling. The medicine she takes (from steroids to chemotherapy, among others) can destroy her body in additional ways, but so far she is tolerating them well. This marathon is run in the middle of the day, and JDM can be triggered by the sun, but we have found ways to cope and still do all the things we love to do outside with modifications. Participating in the marathon as a Children's Hospital team member is more than a way of giving back. It's a celebration of Ava's good health and of Alex's neverending support for his sister!
Please help us celebrate and empower both Alex and Ava by helping them help other children.
