I was at work, and my then 7 year old son, Garrett, was at school one snowy February day in 2011 when I got the call. The call that changed my life and Garrett's life forever. Drew, Garrett's Dad, had passed away suddenly; his liver had failed. He was 47 years old. We had only been in Massachusetts 3 years at the time, and had no blood family near by.
Since then and for the past 3 years, however, Garrett and I have had a new "family", which has supported and comforted us, through our journey of grieving and rebuilding our lives without Drew. The members of our new family were similarly touched by loss of a parent, their lives irrevocably changed by cancer, a fatal accident, suicide, murder. The Children's Room in Arlington, Massachusetts, has provided a warm, safe, supportive environment for all of us.
I’ve been touched by the children and their families whom I've met at The Children’s Room, their resilience, their courage, their love.
Prior to Drew's death, I'd only attended one funeral in my life; I had no idea how to support my 7 year old through this experience of major loss of a parent. He hadn't so much as lost a pet prior to that time.
I remember the first day we went to The Children's Room. Garrett didn't want to go: "I don't want anyone else to know, Mom." But, by the end of that evening, when I gently asked him "How'd it go?", he simply, wordlessly gave me a "thumbs up." For three years now, he's looked forward to going every two weeks to meet and spend time with his friends. The friends who, through shared experience, understand.
I came to learn that, before the graduation of high school, one child out of every 20 children will have a parent die. Centers of support, like the Children's Room, are so critical to families like ours. The Children's Room offers its services free of charge in a warm, welcoming, loving environment.
Our fundraising, your donations are critical to its survival. I invite you to donate to this worthy cause, by supporting my run of the 2015 Boston Marathon.
