Welcome to my fundraising page! I’m new to The Children’s Room, but here is my story.
My story is a little different from the others in that I’m not running for my own personal loss of a family member or loved one; I’m running for my husband’s. At the age of 17, he lost his older brother, Michael, tragically to suicide. As anyone can imagine, this has greatly affected his life, and something he has to live with every day. Even to this day, my husband has a very hard time opening up and talking about his brother.
Being somewhat removed from the situation, it’s sometimes hard for me to fully comprehend such a loss and not knowing what to do or say to do. I find myself probably in the same situation as many people before me. Friends, family members, coworkers of people who have lost someone have all felt this same feeling. .. trying to console, searching for the right words, and just wondering how you can take even a little bit of that pain and heart ache away. For my husband, I know now that just being there with a simple hug and an open ear is sometimes the best thing you can do.
One way he was able to cope with this loss was through exercise. He found peace and solace in running. This is how I came to love running. It became more than just another way to exercise. When we run together, I feel like it has a deeper meaning now, a deeper bond. Almost to say, “I’m here for you, every step of the way, whatever the road might bring.”
As I continue to train through the months of cold days and even longer runs, all the people who have had someone in their lives who has lost someone will be running through my mind. My husband will be training with me, knowing that my race will be helping the healing process for many others.
I will be running to help support The Children’s Room, a wonderful group that helps families heal and cope with the loss of a loved one. The Children’s Room provides their services to these families free of charge so fundraising efforts, like supporting Miles & Memories marathon team, are a huge part of what continues to make this group successful and available to families. From the first moment I stepped into the building, the staff welcomed me like family. Each room felt like a warm living room or playroom that would be in any of our own homes. I could just tell that this was a very special place.
I am truly honored to be chosen for the 6 member team to run this year’s Boston Marathon and support The Children’s Room. Know that your donation will go directly to helping these families in need and to ensuring the continued success of this invaluable organization & it’s staff.
I appreciate any donation so that it helps me reach my goal and to support The Children’s Room.
