EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2013
On March 21, 2011, our now 4 year old son, Deane, was diagnosed with autism. At the time we were shocked, discouraged and overwhelmed. We had no idea what the impact would be on our finances, time, stress level and lifestyle for the foreseeable future.
In the Quad Cities, the cost of providing a single child on the autism spectrum with services for optimum growth and improvement would cost nearly $200,000 per year. Unfortunately, insurance only covers a fraction of these dollars. Every autism parent I’ve met makes drastic compromises to provide what is enough for their child without destroying their family life.
It sounds grim, and it is hard, but there are bright lights in the nonprofits working hard to serve families. One of those is the Children’s Therapy Center of the Quad Cities. We were fortunate to be matched up with our Occupational Therapist, Christy Hansen while Deane was under three years old and in Early Intervention. This allowed us to avoid waiting lists after he turned three and we have been seeing Christy ever since.
Deane’s progress with Christy began with an inability to give more than a minute of shared attention, to today working on writing skills while wearing glasses and focusing for an extended period of time. The variety of skill areas Christy addresses opened our eyes to many of the sensory sensitivities impacting Deane’s abilities. She regularly provides new tools and is a true ally in our fight to eliminate the barriers preventing Deane from fully engaging in our world.
Children’s Therapy Center of the Quad Cities is a nonprofit serving children with physical disabilities and developmental delays in Western Illinois and Southeastern Iowa. Founded in 1949, Children’s Therapy is located in Moline Illinois and provides Occupational, Speech, Physical, and Feeding Therapies. Children’s Therapy makes services available to families regardless of their ability to pay. Our family received a discounted rate when our insurance benefits ran out in 2012 and eventually in 2013!
On April 21st, 2013 WQAD will host the annual telethon for Children’s Therapy. As one of a few families asked to participate, we are asking friends, family and community to support this fantastic service to our area. Please join us in recognizing the good people providing great service to children with disabilities.
Our goal is to raise $1,000 for this worthy cause and any contribution you are comfortable making is deeply appreciated.
Thank you for your consideration,
Chris & Annie
