The earthquake has devastated many settlements, building and other infrastructures in Kathmandu- the capital and nearby districts of Nepal. Actual figures of casualties and damages occurred during the earthquake may not be available in number of months as the search and rescue operations will take long time. Many settlements in the affected districts outside the Capital are in remote areas, which are not even accessible by road. Searching the people/their bodies trapped in many damaged building and other infrastructures in the Capital itself will take a long time due to heavy damages and the availability of limited equipment and trained people. At the moment people affected by the heavy damages are simply waiting for a tent and minimum daily basic necessities. Health institutions are overcrowded by seriously injured people. In addition to the issue of survival of the affected people, there are already the indications of another major disaster – the outbreak of Cholera, dysentery and other epidemics. Decayed dead bodies of people and animals either trapped in the damaged infrastructure or lying down in the absence of people to bury them; unavailability of minimum health and sanitation facilities including (safe!) drinking water; lack of minimum food and medical facilities are already adding up to the miseries of the people already suffering from poverty and unavailability of the daily necessities. Potential post-quake crisis including the outbreak of epidemics are posing other challenges for further suffering of the people.
Many people and institutions around the world seem taking initiatives to extend their helping hands to addressing the impact or preventing/reducing potential vulnerability of the people. As like in any other crisis, Children survived from the disaster are the ones most affected and will remain heavily affected due to effects of the ongoing tragic earthquake and/or any potential post-quake crisis. In order to reach out directly to the people affected by such crisis, and minimise/prevent the potential post-quake crisis, there is a huge need of resources. With the availability of financial resources number of local institutions could deliver directly the required services and facilities to the victims or potential victims at the community level. A small contribution from our side will remain a significant one for the large numbers of Children, who lost their parents/guardians or the entire properties/resources, got injured/sick during the earthquake and those dying for a piece of bread, one piece of clothing to cover their bodies and a tent to stay during the cold nights. Therefore, I would like to request my dear friends, colleagues and all yours possible contacts to work for a little Charity for the Children affected by the earthquake and potential post-quake crisis in Nepal.
Please let me know your interest and availability for such contributions. The resources that we could gather could be handed over to one of the local organisation working for the causes of Children. We could entrust Child Workers in Nepal (CWIN) – website: for mobilising the resources accumulated. I know this organisation since a long as they have a very good track records of working for the children and have been doing number of significant activities for protecting and promoting child rights with focus on children living and working under the most difficult circumstances including child labour, street children, child marriage, bonded labour, trafficking of children, children in conflict and commercial-sexual exploitation of children. They have also been implementing different EU funded projects in Nepal and having very good networks in rural areas of Nepal including the districts, which are heavily affected by the recent earthquake.
