This fundraiser may seem like it's about snowboarding.....and it kind of is....but it's kind of not. As many of you know, I've been working with kids in transition most of whom are just trying to find their way to a permanent and safe home. The wait can be long and frustrating. I began searching for a positive, low cost, outdoor Colorado activity that a kid could completely immerse in while waiting for a home. I felt that if a child had something powerful to look forward to each week that he might be less likely to give into frustration or feel despair. The Chill program delivered far more than I had hoped. Chill outfits the kids for a day of snowboarding in our beautiful Colorado mountains, provides professional instruction and delivers positive and thoughtful messages along the way.....connecting the lessons learned through snowboarding to their daily lives. Chill instructors talk about the value of persistence, patience & responsibility in sports and in life. The staff running the Denver program are exceptionally compassionate and gifted in connecting with and inspiring these young people. Here are a few things Chill children have expressed directly to me over the past few weeks:
"I was having a really frustrating week. The staff in our home turned over and there were different expectations of me. My roommate stole my stuff and I had just reached my limit. But I knew this day was coming up - I've been looking forward to it all week."
"I feel wonderful when I snowboard."
"This has opened up a whole new world to me."
"I'm so happy our school has this program - snowboarding shouldn't be just for the rich kids."
"I'd like to be an instructor some day."
This is a fantastic program. I am grateful and privileged to have been a part of it this year. If you are able to donate to Chill, I can tell you it is a program making a real difference for Colorado's at risk youth. Anything you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you! Wendy Ramsey
