EVENT: 2015 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 20, 2014
Thanks to the generosity of the John Hancock Nonprofit Marathon Program, I have received one of two charity bibs to run the 2015 Boston Marathon for Team BCNC! At 22-years old, I am dedicating 16 weeks to prepare for this 26.2 mile feat, and have pledged to raise $8,000 for Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center (BCNC). So, what exactly does BCNC do and how did I get involved? Keep reading to hear my story!
BCNC empowers immigrant families to achieve their dreams by equipping them with the confidence and resources they need to be active participants in American society. By providing dual-language childcare, ESOL classes, youth leadership and college access programs, BCNC supports individuals of all ages and dreams. BCNC's distinct family-centered approach strives to meet the needs of the entire family, ultimately to strengthen the family as a unit.
After graduating from Bates College in May 2014, I accepted an 11-month AmeriCorps fellowship designed for emerging leaders committed to careers in social impact. Fellows are matched with a nonprofit organization in the Boston Area and assume a capacity building role. I joined BCNC in September 2014 to assist with their strategic planning and evaluation efforts. I first learned about the opportunity to run the Boston Marathon for Team BCNC in October, and immediately applied for several reasons: 1) As a runner, it has been a dream of mine to run a marathon. 2) With the short time I have at BCNC, I wanted to feel a closer connection with the organization and the people it serves. 3) I would be tasked with the great challenge of fundraising, and I wanted to test my ability to raise money for an incredible charity.
As I mentioned, I pledged to raise an ambitious $8,000 to benefit programs and services at BCNC, and am confident that I can achieve this goal with your help. Not only is this my first time tackling fundraising individually, but it is also my first time running a marathon! I feel challenged, empowered, and excited to conquer my fundraising and training goals.
Thank you ALL so much for supporting me monetarily, but more importantly, mentally and emotionally! I hope you consider donating to this wonderful charity that will benefit many deserving constituents. Please come watch me cross the finish line on April 20, 2015!
P.S. If you prefer, you can also make an offline donation by check. Please make checks payable to "BCNC" and write “Team BCNC/Kelly Yardley” on the memo line. Checks can be mailed to 885 Washington Street, Boston, MA 02111. Attn: Team BCNC/Kelly Yardley.
