The ChiveMaryland is teaming up with state and local police departments to provide much needed protective vests for police dog units. Most police departments don't have budgets to equip their dog officers and rely on personal and public donations to purchase vests which run north of $1,000 a unit. There currently have been six police dog deaths in the US due to shooting and stabbing in 2016 according to the Officer Down Memorial Page database (2016). These deaths could have been prevented had many of them had the necessary safety gear. Canines are man's best friend, police k9s are an officer's partner and family through the most dangerous of situations while protecting and serving the community. Donate to the cause today for purchasing gear needed for our furry police officers! Your donations will go to Vested Interests in K9s, a 501(c)3 organization that assigns bullet and stab-proof vests for police dogs. Each vest is custom made for each dog and will go a long way in that officer's 10-yr long service on the streets taking a bite out of crime.
