BENEFITING: Cypress Hills Local Development Corp., Inc.
EVENT DATE: May 21, 2016
Since 1983, Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation has worked tirelessly to promote equity, empowerment and economic growth for its residents. With community residents leading the way, the mission of CHLDC is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills and East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community. We develop affordable housing, educate and counsel first-time homebuyers and organize tenant associations. We help young people to organize and improve local public schools, and to apply to college and succeed there. We run afterschool and summer camp programs, employment programs for young adults, ESOL and high school equivalency classes, and local farmers’ markets. Together, our programs strengthen the area’s physical and economic infrastructure, provide quality services, and foster local leaders. And in total, about 10,000 people each year benefit from our work.
Meet your runners and learn why they run for CHLDC:
Alec Appelbaum, Friend of CHLDC: Running the Brooklyn Half gives a great reminder that Brooklyn is a complicated place, with a lot of potential and a lot of unmet human needs. I'm running for CHLDC to honor the tireless effort its staff and leaders make to help their Brooklyn community stay in the running for better lives."
Lowell Herschberger, Director of Career and Education Programs: Running for me is a metaphor for CHLDC’s work. Our comprehensive, community revitalization work does not come with a one-time campaign or single program. It takes sustained effort over all sorts of terrain. When I run I am reminded of the long-term challenge of the work, and each time I finish a run, I am reminded of the supreme joy that accompanies every effort.
Lisa LoFaso, Program Director for the Student Success Center: Running is how I stay grounded. A tough run can remind you that things won't always be easy, but the road will always there tomorrow to try again. I am continually in awe of the resilience of our young people in pursuit of their dreams. Their paths are not always linear, but they are always inspiring. I run for them.
Jason Rodriguez, Former Board Member: As a former member of the board of directors I am familiar with the tireless efforts that are put forth on a daily basis by all employees and board members. Their programs supporting urban agricultural and healthy food choices are particularly dear to me and I will be proud to lace up my running shoes in honor of CHLDC and the community as a whole.
Any money raised will be used where it's most needed, but all of it will go towards funding amazing work spearheaded by community residents and passionate staff. Thanks for your contribution!
