BENEFITING: CHILDRENS HOSPITAL & RESEARCH CENTER AT OAKLAND
EVENT DATE: Jan 25, 2014
The Patient Care Fund at Children’s Hospital and Research Center at Oakland provides discharge medicines at no cost to families who cannot otherwise afford them. It is supported solely by donations and fundraisers.
In over 100 years, Children’s Hospital Oakland has never turned away a child for the family’s inability to pay. While being one of the nation’s top pediatric hospitals, we have stayed a vital safety net for the sickest and the poorest children in the region. The Patient Care Fund was established in 2005 by a group of pediatric resident physicians who felt the pain of families unable to provide medicine for their children. The residents work hands on, around the clock, to care for sick and injured kids, and they often write the discharge orders and prescriptions to send those kids home.
The Patient Care Fund is a humane and brilliantly cost effective part of a great institution. For every child who is discharged from the hospital, there is a risk of him "bouncing back" to the ED and the ward. Uninsured, impoverished families who do not fill the discharge prescriptions and finish the course of treatment are obviously at much higher risk of bouncing back. Sadly, there are many such families who, without the fund, would just roll the dice.
Twenty dollars worth of steroids and antibiotics can prevent a costly re-admission of a child with pneumonia and asthma. Fifty dollars worth of wound care supplies and medicines could allow an accident victim to heal at home without infection. Just one bounce back admission of an uninsured child could easily cost the hospital thousands of dollars. Our goal of $20,000 would go very far to ensure that all patients discharged could finish their courses of treatment as prescribed by the doctors. Think of the cost savings to the hospital, allowing it to focus its resources on cutting edge research and care. Think of the children healing, safe in their homes. And think of the relief and gratitude of the parents, who would have had nowhere else to turn, whom you will be helping with your donation.
