THE STORY:

Christopher Sacco wrote -

Grow Food Where People Live helps people help themselves. I hope you will join us this spring in expanding the initiative to more vulnerable people in Western North Carolina.

Unlike welfare programs and typical charity models, Grow Food Where People Live addresses the root causes of food insecurity and economic vulnerability with a practical, “learning by doing” approach that builds participants’ confidence while meeting their basic needs. When people see the changes they are bringing about, it empowers them, and soon they become the lead actors in improving their own lives. In this way we are overcoming the dependency and learned helplessness that perpetuate the cycle of poverty.

Last year Groundswell International launched the Grow Food Where People Live initiative to improve the health, food security, and economic wellbeing of vulnerable people in Polk County, NC. We are supporting low-income families to grow their own food, learn valuable skills and organize food-buying clubs to improve their household economies, and start market gardens and food-related enterprises to earn more money.

Your support today will help us establish another Community Micro-Farm, a key component of the Grow Food Where People Live program. Micro-farms are production oriented family and neighborhood-scale gardens and orchards. This new micro-farm will be similar to the one we created at a section 8 housing facility in Polk County in May 2015. More than 100 residents and volunteers came together for an intensive community workday (a “Permablitz”) to transform the facility into a verdant, vibrant community space that grew an abundance of healthy food over the summer and into the fall, served as a training space for developing new life skills, and strengthened community ties. It's still going strong, and based on its success we want to do more!
