CAC has developed the park initiative which is designed to create safe green space (22.3 acres) for healing and bonding in the lives under-resourced, over-burdened families in the Samuel Gompers housing development in East St. Louis, Illinois.
Once the park is functional, CAC’s intention is to establish community webbing and use participation in league sports, park and water play across neighborhoods in our city to decrease territorial violence.
The Christian Activity Center engages East St. Louis youth during out-of-school hours. Recognizing that youth demonstrate the greatest risk-taking behavior between the hours of 3pm and 8pm on weekdays, CAC ushers youth into the Center for programs in:
Education: college access, digital technology and computer skills training in our computer clubhouse (sponsored by Intel); tutoring in small groups and 1:1 in our homework room.
Wellness: trauma therapy, character development, arts, recreation. CAC houses a medical clinic and employs a Family Nurse Practitioner to provide free care to children and youth ages 5-18.
