CWJC Adult Education

CWJC empowers individuals to overcome obstacles caused by poverty by providing education, mentoring, and resources

CWJC of Middle TN was founded in 1997 and became a separate 501(c)3 in 2003. CWJC Programs are offered in four satellite locations: downtown Nashville, Madison (2 sites: men’s and women’s), and Williamson County (Franklin), TN. CWJC’s comprehensive one-to-two year approach provides each participant with a mentor, educational classes, crisis intervention, college scholarship search, employment network, and case management. Educational classes include program tracks in High School Equivalency (GED/HSE), Literacy, English Language (ESL), and Computer/Job Skills. All of our services are free, including childcare. Each program track consists of three semesters of class, assessments, creation of a goal plan, classroom instruction (12 per class), tutoring, small group and other individual services. Central to CWJC’s mission and ability to provide programs are volunteers who come alongside each student as a teacher, tutor, mentor, and childcare provider. The significant role of volunteers in our agency is one of the reasons for our success. Volunteers are highly trained, supervised by a Program Director, and as committed to their volunteer assignment as they would be if they were a staff member. Agency wide, there are over 290 volunteers with half serving 2 to 4 hours weekly. It is in this nurturing environment that students are facing the challenges of life, setting personal and educational goals for themselves and their children and succeeding in reaching them. Last year, CWJC of Middle TN served 245 adults (61 or 25% were men) with an annual graduation rate of 36% which is higher than the average rate of GED programs in the Nashville community (28%). All students were at or below the federal poverty rate which is CWJC’s target population. Demographics for each site for 2014 are as follows: Nashville served 57 women - African American 81%, Caucasian 17%, and multiracial 2%; Madison Women’s Program served 58 - African American 35%, Caucasian 48%, Hispanic 14%, and international 3%; Madison Men’s Program served 29 – African American 42%, Caucasian 30%, and Hispanic 28%; Williamson County served 103 (32 were men) – African American 3%, Caucasian 2%, Hispanic (from a variety of central and south American countries) 96%, other nationalities 2% (Belarus and Japan). Students range in age from 18-60 with the majority between 25 and 35. CWJC also cared for 152 children when their parents were in class. Education Program totals for 2014: High School Equivalency (GED/HSE) 148, English Language (ESL) 62, Computer/Job Skills 26, Literacy 5, One-on-one Goal Program 4. We have several graduates now enrolled at Columbia State Community College, Nashville State, and Vol State pursuing social work, business, and nursing degrees. Staff and volunteers have assisted students in acquiring scholarships for these colleges.
