Christina Runs America
Organized by: Christina Lee
EVENT DATE Jul 07, 2014
This 4th of July weekend, I'll be starting my journey from NYC to SF, running 3100 miles over 99 days to raise money for the Navy SEAL Foundation (easiersaidthanrun.com). I'm aiming to raise $100,000 for the cause, but before I can do that, I'm looking to raise money to cover some of the personal costs involved in the journey.
I just graduated from two colleges simultaneously, one of which was in Manhattan and ranked the #3 most expensive school in America, which is to say that I'm twice as broke as most college students. In addition, I quit all of my after school jobs 6 months ago to train full time for this adventure, so I've been living off my savings for almost half a year. While I still have a little more in the bank (mainly due to the kindness of my family), the costs involved in running 3100 miles are not small.
Just a few of the costs I'm encountering:
- running shoes (at least 5 pairs!)
- spare tires/reflective tape/water-proofing for the baby jogger
- electrolyte sports drink ($200 just in liquids. YIKES!)
- Food costs. So MUCH food costs.
- several pairs of running socks/shorts/anti-chafing tops
- reflective safety vest
- many bottles of sunscreen and mosquito repellant
- motel costs along my route
- publicity costs
- FOOOOOOOOOOOOD. Seriously. Running over 6 hours a day takes lots of fuel.
- etc etc.
While I'm trying to be as frugal as possible, skimping on nutrition, safety, or supplies is a great way to ensure I never make it to SF and lose out on the opportunity to raise a lot of money for the Foundation. Thus money donated to this campaign will still be of great utility to the Navy SEAL Foundation, as it will ensure that I compete the journey I set out on and raise as much money as possible for the cause.
As a note, I have provided just a rough estimate on how much money I think it will require for me to fully equip and feed myself over the next 4 months. If it in fact costs less than this amount, or, by some act of untold generosity I raise more than I need, all extra money will be donated to the Foundation to be counted towards the 100k total.
