Christina's Mission Trip to Honduras
Organized by: Christina Pulpan
In April I will get the opportunity to serve different medical facilities in Honduras on a mission trip with my classmates from the Nursing School of Oklahoma Christian University. While in Honduras, we will get to provide services to the children in the rural mountain schools by promoting physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Some of the topics of information include building self-esteem, nutrition, good dentition, and prevention of drug abuse and pregnancy and other ill behaviors. While in the mountains, we will also provide health care services to the rural population which includes diabetic screenings, referral assessments, and wound healing. We will be stationed in the small city of Catacamas where we work in close proximity with a Church of Christ-based clinic which serves the city’s population. Our work with the clinic includes education at the local schools, obstetric health, and overall physical health. We also work with the men and women at CEREPA, the local drug and alcohol abuse institution, helping to build spiritual growth and self-esteem. And finally, we spend time at the hospital in Juticulpa. This is mostly observational in which we observe the similarities and differences between the US healthcare system and healthcare in a third-world country. However, we do provide care similar to what a nurse aid or tech would. We also use the time in Juticulpa, to provide education such as initial trauma treatment and CPR to the nurses working in the hospital.
I am so excited to get to go on this special journey with my classmates! My mission as a nursing student it to be able to provide for these people who are in need of care and education, and to also have the opportunity to spread the word of God. Donations are greatly appreciated as well as prayers! Thank you all in advance and I can't wait to go and be able to share this experience with all of you!
