I am racing Ironman 70.3 Atlantic City in preparation for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii in October. I decided to add this race to my calendar and join the Stomp the Monster Team to support and honor several friends and family members who were or are currently battling cancer.
This race will be in loving memory of my cousin, Brian Kasch, who lost his battle with cancer in January of 2016. Brian and his brother Keith were like older brothers to me growing up, always looking out for me and Brian's sense of humor kept us laughing every time we got together - I will not forget him. I am also remembering the amazing Doug Clark, who lost his battle with brain cancer in December of 2016. I had the benefit of speaking with his wife, Hillary, at the Team Bloke 5K in Mendham, NJ on August 5, admiring her strength and courage as she ran the course as well, smiling and chatting with everyone along the way, then landing on the podium herself. Doug looked down on us from above, the thunderstorms from earlier in the day cleared for perfect race conditions, and Doug pushed me along to run a fast 5 K pace - speed I have not seen from myself in awhile!
This race will honor two very strong ladies, my friends that are breast cancer survivors, Sharon Friedman, a woman who has proven time again that anything is possible and to never give up on your dreams. While she has moved to FL so we don't train and race together as often, she inspires me with her endless tenacity and fearless determination to make things happen. I will also honor Lyza Lyon, who has given a new meaning to staying strong, fighting back, embracing second chances and making the most of life and love. Lyza's ability to juggle her work and two young kids while fighting that terrible disease and coming back stronger and happier than she was before is nothing short of amazing!
I am also racing for Jill Myers, a friend and colleague at Inventiv Health, diagnosed with widespread Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) resulting in unilateral mastectomy and reconstruction; however, thanks to screening and early detection she is recovering well.
Finally, I will race for a friend, Melvin Yee, currently undergoing cancer treatment - I will carry him with me and share my strength on race day.
