January 2003, my mom Susan Harvey was diagnoised with melanomia. She was working her beloved job as an elementry school teacher, raising her children and enjoying her life with my dad, her husband of 32 years. She was happy, active, healthy and (in her words) incredibly blessed. By August, 2003, she was dead. Melanoma took her life . One small strange looking "pimple" on her leg that would heal then come back, a blemish my mom was embarressed of because it wasnt pretty on her slender, even-toned legs, ended up being the devil himself. Five years it was left to plot and multiply. By the time it was , ehmm CORRECTLY diagnoised, it was too late.
This terrible disease, so easily preventable, so easily treatable if caught early, becomes an incidous rapid moving killer when missed. As I know too well even the best in dermatology can miss indentifiying a killer. I am running to help further reasearch and awarness. We are still so far from beating melanoma. Prevention is our greatest ali. I'm running in honor of my sweet momma. If she was alive today she'd be running for Jacks Fund right along side of me, sunscreen and hat, happy, positive, smiling ..as always.
