BENEFITING: CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING
Many disabled teens are told that going to college and finding a job is beyond their grasp. Instead they are steered toward government and dependence programs. These uninspiring and unhopeful messages can set the tone for a lifetime.
MAPS provides students with 1-on-1 guidance in developing essays, resumes, and college applications. They gain self-reliance through coaching and outdoor activities, learning that they have real options for their futures.
MAPS' results have exceeded expectations in its first year. Two student mentees have applied for UC Berkeley, and our amazing mentors have been honored by the City of Oakland.
The Center for Independent Living is seeking additional funds to expand the program.
