Thanks to the John Hancock Nonprofit Program, Citizen Schools has received 4 bib numbers for the Boston Marathon to be held on Monday, April 21, 2014!
These numbers will be used to raise much needed funds to help Citizen Schools close the opportunity and achievement gaps for low-income middle schools students in Massachusetts.
Imagine a nation of schools where learning is relevant and engaging and where students stay in school, succeed in school, and graduate from high school ready for college. Citizen Schools believes that the key to restoring public education as an engine of opportunity lies in creating more time for learning, more high quality and relevant learning activities, and more relationships between students and a network of caring adults. Since its inception in Boston in 1995, Citizen Schools has been committed to closing the opportunity and achievement gap for low-income students and reinstating public education as a gateway to economic opportunity and family security. In order to stay on track for success, adolescents need access to relevant, hands-on learning, inspiring role models, meaningful information about educational and career opportunities, and adequate time to practice their academic skills. Far too often, however, middle schools that serve high-need communities are ill-equipped to provide these experiences on their own. They lack time during a constrained school day, an infrastructure for engaging volunteers who can bring rapidly changing fields like science and technology to life and staff with capacity to focus on family outreach and building a culture of achievement.
