BENEFITING: City of Dreams
BACKGROUND Started in 2004, CITY OF DREAMS is a local, SF-based non-profit with an important but difficult mission: ending the generational poverty cycle in some of our most challenged neighborhoods. Our goals are simple: (1) work with at-risk youth to rise above the drugs, gangs, and teenage pregnancies so prevalent in their lives and (2) empower them to graduate high school. WHY CITY OF DREAMS? Because your donation will have a HUGE IMPACT! CITY OF DREAMS currently operates on a budget of less than $150K. Any additional contributions will be thoughtfully leveraged to continue all the progress the organization has made in the last 14 years.
In the past three years the staff and volunteers have accomplished the following:
The Oakdale Community Center – Rejuvenated Oakdale community center into an urban oasis
The Oakdale Community Farm - Created an Urban Farm to increase access to fresh and healthy food within one of San Francisco's largest food deserts. We also starting managing two other community gardens in the Bayview in 2016 and 2017!
Youth Development Services – Program offerings in the past year include over 40 Saturday experiential learning events (including sailing, skiing, camping, hiking, community clean-up, violence prevention, mountain biking, farming, and more), a summer junior gardeners program, afterschool tutoring and art workshops, junior mentor leadership program, and mentorship pairings
In-Kind Donations – Matched every dollar donated with over two dollars of in-kind donations (mentor volunteer hours, discounted/gratis events, donated supplies, etc.) Partnerships – Partnered with dozens of local organizations (San Francisco Housing Development Corporation, Rebuilding Together, California Academy of Sciences, BAYCAT, Exploratorium, Blue Water Foundation, Circus Center, Slide Ranch, Spinsters and corporations (Boston Properties, Dolby, Slalom Consulting Aspect Foundation) to bring more services and support to the youth and community-at-large. BEYOND THE DONATION – COME FOR A VISIT! The best way to see the good that your donation can do, COME FOR A VISIT! We have opportunities for Qatalyst employees to put their handprint on the center and engage with the youth. In recent months, companies like Boston Properties, Dolby, and Slalom Consulting have come for volunteer days where they help clean-up the center, paint murals, work in the garden, and/or spend time with our youth. We welcome you to the center to see all that your donation is helping accomplish!
