BENEFITING: City Year
ORGANIZER: City Year
EVENT: Philadelphia Marathon 2016
EVENT DATE: Nov 20, 2016
I've never considered myself a runner and it wasn't until two years ago that I decided to give it a chance. I have always admired runner's discipline, commitment, and endurance to training and racing. From the very beginning I realized how welcoming and high-energy the running community is; I've had the opportunity to meet people from different walks in life and make meaninful friendships.
I only have a couple of races under my belt but I've always wanted to run for a cause greater than myself. This November, I have the opportunity to run for my favorite city and in support one of the toughest (but most rewarding) jobs, teaching. I am partnering up with City Year Philadelphia, an organization that works to bridge the gap in high-poverty communities between the support that students actually need, and what their schools are designed and resourced to provide. In doing so, they are helping to increase graduation rates across the country, and changing the lives of the students they serve. I have close friends that have served communitities through City Year and have the uttermost respect for the noble work that they do!
In Philadelphia, more than 200 City Year AmeriCorps members serve in 14 schools reaching more than 8,000 students. City Year serves in the highest-need schools, where even the best teachers and administrators struggle to keep up with all the challenges their students face. Our diverse, professionally trained teams of City Year AmeriCorps members increase the ratio of adults to students in the school building, and provide individualized attention and support, in and outside of class.
City Year Philadelphia is proud and excited to serve as a charity partner again this year with the 2016 Philadelphia Marathon and Half-Marathon, and I am honored to run for an amazing cause.
Thank you for your support!
