BENEFITING: City Harvest, Inc.
ORGANIZER: City Harvest, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
Did you know that 1 in 4 children in New York City don’t know when or where their next meal is coming from? There are some statistics that catch your attention, but only a few capture your heart.
I was born into poverty in Guyana, my siblings and I grew up with hunger being a constant presence in our home. They say it takes a village to raise a child and we survived because of the kindness of our neighbors and fellow villagers. I assure you that regardless of geography (whether you are in third world South America or the richest city in the greatest country in the world) hunger is universal and the effects can last a lifetime. In 1989, I was fortunate to migrate to the US, because of the life I now have I am able to leave my childhood behind….. but hunger, you never forget hunger.
For this reason I have decided to take on the greatest physical challenge of my life and run the 2016 TCS NYC Marathon to help City Harvest fight hunger in New York City. Founded in 1982 as the world’s first food rescue organization, City Harvest is dedicated to helping feed the more than 1.4 million New Yorkers facing hunger. I have personally committed to raise $4,000.00 – enough to rescue and deliver 16,000 pounds of food to less fortunate families, food that would otherwise go to waste. Gifts are put to immediate use to help provide food for New Yorkers in need. City Harvest will collect 50 million pounds of excess food from grocers, restaurants, bakeries, manufacturers and farms, and deliver it free of charge to more than 500 community food programs across the city this year.
I am humbly asking you, my fellow villagers, to help me reach my goal and end hunger by donating here. I sincerely thank you for your support to City Harvest and hungry families everywhere thank you for bringing awareness to this important cause. Every dollar donated helps rescue four pounds of food, so please give generously.
On behalf of your neighbors/villagers in need, thank you…thank you!!
More about City Harvest
Founded in 1982 as the world’s first food rescue organization, City Harvest (cityharvest.org) is dedicated to helping feed the more than 1.4 million New Yorkers facing hunger. City Harvest will collect 50 million pounds of excess food from restaurants, grocers, bakeries, manufacturers, and farms, and deliver it free of charge to more than 500 community food programs across the city this year. In addition to helping meet the immediate need for food, City Harvest takes a long-term approach to fighting hunger by partnering with residents, local organizations and businesses through Healthy Neighborhoods programs which increase the availability of affordable fruits and vegetables in low-income communities and provide the nutrition education and resources to maintain a wholesome, food-secure diet.
