In food deserts like West Oakland, many community members don’t have access to a nearby grocery store, let alone basic amenities like public green spaces where their children play, explore and grow in a safe environment.
With your help, City Slicker Farms is striving to change that. For 14 years we've been transforming vacant, blighted urban lots into thriving urban gardens. And from there, we empower our community members to take a more active role in their own food system–whether it’s through growing their own produce, learning green jobs skills, mentoring another backyard gardener, or visiting the community farm stands on weekends.
Delinda Horton, XX at the West Oakland Health Center, talks about how their garden from City Slicker Farms benefits her patients:
"We got a garden from City Slicker Farms to help low-income pregnant women eat more fruits and vegetables. Today, over 100 people benefit from our garden. I have an 'open garden' policy. All patients are welcome to pick from the garden, and they do!"
For the expectant mothers at West Oakland Health Center, the low-income families trying to eat healthy on a budget, and the young men and women gaining leadership skills through our youth program, your backing is an invaluable gift.
Please give now–give the gift of growing power!
