There are millions of waste pickers around the world that live in extreme poverty. They are marginalized in most societies because they survive by going through other people’s garbage extracting discarded food, clothing, plastic, metal, etc.
Ciudad Saludable (Healthy City) has been turning waste pickers into entrepreneurs in over 200 cities throughout Latin America and India. Ciudad Saludable empowers waste pickers to create associations or microenterprises for the collection, transportation and final disposal of waste. By helping small entrepreneurs, who are former waste pickers, acquire training and needed equipment, such as motorized tricycles, weighing scales, or aluminum can crushers, Ciudad Saludable increases their productivity and promotes their inclusion in municipal waste management systems. The newly minted waste picker entrepreneurs are trained to do door-to-door waste collection which transforms the approach of obtaining recyclable materials from scavenging in the dumps.
I invite you to watch this brief two-minute video (to the left of this message) to witness the impact of Ciudad Saludable’s work on the working and living conditions of a waste picker.
With your help, we can fulfill our promise of bringing more waste pickers from the dumps to the formal waste management sector.
