BENEFITING: ALZHEIMERS DRUG DISCOVERY FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Nov 03, 2013
Alzheimer’s is a progressive, fatal disease of the brain. There are currently no drugs available to prevent nor slow its destructive course. I was once told Alzheimer's is like a once radiant candle slowly dimming. The light is fading for 36 million people worldwide and in 2013, this fatal disease will cost our nation alone $203 billion. Too many families have helplessly watched their loved ones succumb to the horrible conditions of this disease.
In 2008 my father Ron Johnson was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. Over the last 5 years my family and I have watched my father, one of the most dynamic individuals I know, lose his ability to do and enjoy even some of life's most basic routines; work, exercise, discover, and learn. The cruel reality is that there is nothing beyond the intense love and care that will slow the progression of the disease. Although it may be too late to help my father Ron, I've dedicated myself to working towards a future where no other family has to watch a loved one battle Alzheimer's.
In honor of my father's lifetime dedication to helping others and to support this new mission to defeat Alzheimer's through drug discovery, I am competing in three events:
September 29 - BMW Berlin Marathon
October 27 - IRONMAN 70.3 Miami
November 3 - ING New York City Marathon
Last year, together we raised $83,422 for the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF)www.alzdiscovery.org - this group is focused solely on accelerating the discovery of drugs to prevent, treat and cure Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. My events are dedicated to supporting the ADDF and its work to save families from the hardship my family has and continues to experience. All of your support will go directly to the ADDF, in which 100% of those funds will aid the tireless work to research treatments and find a cure.
I hope you can help me on this journey as I continue Ron's legacy of helping others and defeating this devastating disease.
