THE STORY:

I’m psyched to be running the Boston marathon this year! Growing up in the Boston area, the marathon has always been a special event and it’s been on my bucket list for years.

But why now and why for Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP), you ask?

Let’s break it down:

(1)    Running is in my genes – My father is an avid runner and for years had been trying to get me to run too. Of course that meant that I was fundamentally against running and instead started swimming as a kid. I finally took my father’s advice and started running in grad school. It was great stress relief and I quickly became addicted. I have completed several half marathons and one full marathon over the past few years. My dad and I ran a half marathon together last year (his first!) and I’m embarrassed to say he beat me by sprinting the last half mile. My dad ran the last 9 miles of the NYC marathon with me and he patiently took my moaning and groaning (and yelling at him). I’m looking forward to a repeat performance this year!

(2)    Defining Life Experiences – As a child of two Massachusetts Jews, CJP has been in my lexicon since I can remember. In later years, CJP has provided me with multiple amazing and life changing experiences. It, therefore, only seems appropriate that I run on behalf of this organization.

I moved back to the Boston area in 2011 and on one of my first evenings I attended the CJP open house with a camp friend I had recently re-connected with. There I ran into several people from camp, college, and other walks of life. It was amazing to walk into an event in a new city and reconnect with so many amazing people. Shortly after I did LEADS, a program for young Jewish professionals. I met many new wonderful friends in my group and I really started to feel like a part of the community.

In the summer of 2012 I had the opportunity to travel to Israel on the CJP sponsored mission with 39 young leaders from the Boston area. I have been to Israel several times but this trip was truly special. While exploring the country and our Jewish roots we also forged lasting friendships that have carried over to our lives in Boston.

Money raised for CJP will provide opportunities for teens and young adults to travel to Israel, attend Jewish overnight camp, and form communities so they too can grow, learn, and develop into proud, inspired adults.

(3)     And if not now, when?– Finally, I had the opportunity to run the final few miles of the marathon last year with a friend (who I met on the mission trip to Israel!). She was running for CJP. It was a hard day for her and I offered as much encouragement and support as I could while we chugged up heartbreak hill, along Beacon St in Brookline, and finally crossed into Boston. We had just started visualizing the finish line, about a mile ahead, when we started to notice some weird things. The T abruptly stopped and we heard the conductor forcefully say that everyone needed to get off. A police car crossed the marathon path. People were walking towards us on Comm Ave, the opposite direction of the finish line. But it wasn’t until a group of friends picked us out of the crowd that we realized something had gone terribly wrong. My friend, like many people, didn’t get to finish her race that day. Our city, along with the families and individuals affected directly by the marathon bombings, will never be the same. I am especially proud to be running this year as our city returns to normalcy after this emotional and trying year. And I hope that this year my friend will be able to cross the finish line with me to finish her race.

I hope you will join me and my teammate in supporting an organization that does incredible work in Boston and throughout the world. Any donation helps!

Thank you and see you on April 21st!
