CLAIRE'S STORY
Thirteen year old Claire Wineland was born with Cystic Fibrosis. CF is a genetic disease that causes excessive mucus secretion and collection, especially in the lungs. In her short life, Claire has undergone dozens of surgeries and has spent weeks at a time in the hospital. Claire is a singer, an artist, a composer, and a natural-born comedian. She is precious to anyone who has met her, but most especially to her mother, Melissa, and her father, John.
Claire’s case has taken a harrowing and miraculous turn. On April thirteenth, after a relatively routine surgery, Claire became septic and within 24 hours, was in complete lung failure. Her parents were given the option of watching Claire die or putting her on a dangerous Oscillator vent, which no child with Cystic Fibrosis has ever come off. John and Melissa opted to put her on the vent and into a drug induced coma so the doctors could try everything possible to reverse the damage to her lungs and her body.
While Claire lay in her coma, kept alive by the maximum amount of life support possible, her friends and family began to pray.
After a 14 excruciating days of unforeseen obstacles and breakthroughs, Claire came first off of the Oscillator, then off of the regular vent and most recently off of the high power oxygen support mask. Her doctors are amazed at her “historic” progress and her parents are overjoyed to have her back.
She is currently on breathing treatments every four hours to keep her lungs open, is on countless medications and is receiving physical therapy twice a day. The best outcome is that Claire will be selected to undergo a transplant at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. If Claire is not accepted by CHLA, then it will be necessary for the family to leave the city in search of another hospital. That would be the most costly scenario, costing upwards of $1,000,000.
