Happy New Year! I am forever grateful for your support in November's NYC marathon (official or not), and am again asking for your support in another upcoming adventure to raise funds for Every Mother Counts. I will be joining two of my friends this February 15th to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. My goal is to raise lots of money for maternal health.
Please donate here or send a check to "Every Mother Counts" with "Clancy/Kilimanjaro" in the memo line and send to: Every Mother Counts 805 15th St, NW, Suite 700 Washington DC 20005
Why is climbing Kilimanjaro relevant to maternal health?
I first traveled to Tanzania in 2009 to film for Christy Turlington Burns' "No Woman, No Cry" the documentary film I co-produced about the global state of maternal health. I was able to spend time with local pregnant women in the Arusha area and witnessed firsthand the barriers these women and their caregivers face in accessing quality health care. Climbing Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world and highest mountain in Africa, will be a 7 day hike. Kilimanjaro is 19,341 feet, which shockingly is less than the average distance a pregnant woman in the developing world must travel to receive the basic health care necessary to deliver her baby. For many women in developing countries, that means walking while 9 months pregnant and in labor. If the woman needs more comprehensive obstetric care, that distance increases considerably. Watch our PSA, "The Walk" to learn more.
Where will these funds go:
100% of what I raise will be going to support women in need around the world. In the past year, we've announced two new grants that EMC dollars will be supporting. We are funding training for 15 women in Haiti to become skilled birth attendants who will each attend at least 100 deliveries per year and we are also providing transport vouchers for women in western Uganda so that they can access maternity care throughout their pregnancies. With this figure the money raised, we will be able to commit more to these grants and others like them that we are going to be vetting so that we can grow our portfolio. Much love, Clancy
