BENEFITING: Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech
ORGANIZER: Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech
EVENT DATE: Nov 06, 2016
I am running in the New York City Marathon this year to support the Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech.
In July 2014, our daughter Hazel contracted bacterial meningitis because of a previously-undiagnosed immune deficiency. Hazel spent 19 days in the hospital and lost 100% of her hearing as a result of her illness.
We were devastated and uncertain when we learned that Hazel was deaf. Even after making the decision to have Hazel receive bilateral cochlear implants in November 2014, we didn’t know what life would hold in store for her. Because there is no school for the hearing impaired in the New York State Capital District where we live, we weren’t certain if we would have the support mechanism necessary to ensure that Hazel would do as well as possible with her cochlear implants. It was at this time that Clarke came into our life and became an incredible source of strength and guidance.
Although we live hours away from the nearest Clarke campus, the teachers and professionals at Clarke were instantly committed to doing everything they could to help Hazel. Hazel now has weekly sessions with Marian Hartblay of Clarke’s Northhampton preschool through the tVISIT program (Telepractice Virtual Intervention Services). Hazel also regularly makes in-person visits to Clarke for additional teaching and assistance.
Hazel has made unbelievable progress over the last one and a half years, in no small part because of the wonderful support she has received from Marian and everyone else at Clarke. Clarke provides children who are deaf or hard of hearing with the listening, learning, and spoken language skills they need to succeed. Our plan is for Hazel to go to mainstream pre-school and elementary school, which will be supplemented by continued specialized instruction from Clarke.
I am running the NYC marathon on November 6 in honor of Hazel and Clarke. I want to both give back to a school that has given so much to us, and also to do my part to ensure that Clarke has the resources it needs to help families like ours for years to come.
I have committed to raising $2,500 for Team Clarke. 100% of the donations will provide direct support for the life-changing programs and services Clarke offers for children like Hazel who are deaf or hard of hearing and their families.
Thank you so much for your generous help with this effort!
