WORLDWIDE FOUNDATION FOR CREDIT UNIONS INC via Crowdrise

Busia Compassionate Centre, an orphanage that was founded and is managed by local volunteers in western rural Kenya, is a World Council program supported by WF (Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions). The center cares for children when no one else is able to, and helps alleviate the difficult challenges faced in young communities like Busia, with 59% of its population under the age of 20.
In 2007, World Council started working with the orphanage under a U.S. Department of Agrigulture (USDA) program to mitigate the impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in western Kenya. At Busia Compassionate Centre many of the children are either HIV-positive or have lost their parents due to the disease. Now that the USDA program has ended, however, much is left to be done to support the children's educational needs at the orphanage to ensure bright futures—and our organization needs to be heard.
Our goal is to provide educational grants to children of HIV/AIDS-affected households through the area's savings and credit cooperatives (SACCOs), or credit unions, and to provide new classrooms for the children currently living at Busia Orphanage. We have also worked to bring formal financial services to Busia by creating a credit union and financial literacy programs that will provide a pathway out of poverty. There will be a member outreach center at the orphanage to offer the community direct access to savings accounts.
The new classrooms will provide a space for the children to study, learn, and interact in a comfortable way. By providing new classrooms, supporting financial literacy initiatives, and growing vegetable gardens, we believe that the orphanage will be equipped with the tools it needs to become self-sustainable. The new classrooms will provide more room, and equip the children with the educational materials needed for quality learning.
We sincerely thank you for your support and for spreading the word about our program.
